History

In 1983, the inaugural “A Tribute to Black Men” gala honored 12 distinguished Black men for their outstanding contributions and accomplishments. Since its inception, "A Tribute to Black Men" has honored 358 unsung heroes who have made outstanding contributions to society through their professions, civic or community service.

Some of our Monarch Men have included: the late Entertainer Oscar Brown, Jr., Journalist Harry Porterfield, Rapper/Actor Common, Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, Chicago Radio Legend the late Herb Kent, Actor Harry Lennix, and the 44th President of the United States, Barack H. Obama. Our past Monarch Men are agents of change within their respective professions and many remain engaged and influential in our communities.

Monarch Men were honored for their service in the following areas: Business, Communication, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Public Service, Religion, Sports and Statesmanship.
